Wow, demolition of the interior of the house took, like, no time!
Here's the view towards the back of the house, through what used to be the kitchen and will soon(ish) be the dining room:
There was a lot of speculation about what would be under what we used to call the "bookcase thingies." The answer: hardwood floor.

so, are you going to pull up all the flooring to have all hardwood floor??
Yeah, they're going to patch the area under the bookcase thingies (it's parquet under there, but the floor around it is no longer parquet) and extend the hardwood floor into the new kitchen. J & I debated a lot about the wisdom of having hardwood in a kitchen, but decided to go with it in order to avoid having a place where the flooring changes, since philosophically it's kinda one big room.
Our kitchen floor is hardwood (& our Chicago kitchen was too) & it actually works pretty well- Now I remember that Our Beverly floor was too, but old & unprotected. With a few coats of (verathane?) it seems to do fine- less trouble than lino that needs waxing It will be beautiful!
The old kitchen had hardwood floors, and it was extremely worn when we moved in. We eventually had the floors refinished (which was a HUGE pain--had to move everything in the house 3 times). Now, the wood in the (old) kitchen is pretty worn again. Thus our angst...
